Peanut germination methods

The peanut is a common cash crop with extremely high nutritional value. It is often used for nourishment and tonification, and it can also help extend life. When planting, to ensure its germination rate and avoid excessive waste of seeds, the seeds are germinated before planting. After germination, peanut seeds not only achieve a germination rate as high as 95% or more, but also emerge uniformly, which makes management easier. Below, the editor brings you its germination methods, so let us learn about them together.

1. Sunning the seeds

After long-term storage, peanuts absorb moisture from the air, which makes the seeds have a relatively high moisture content and makes them unsuitable for sowing. Therefore, before sowing, the peanuts should first be sunned for one or two days. When sunning the seeds, choose clear weather. Do not place the peanuts directly on concrete ground or stone slabs; use cloth or bamboo utensils as a base to prevent high temperatures from scorching and damaging the seeds, which would affect the germination rate.

2. Shelling and selecting the seeds

After sunning the seeds, shelling can be done. Note that the closer the shelling time is to the sowing time, the better; it is best to shell and sow as you go. During shelling, manual work is best, as machinery easily damages the seeds. After shelling, use screens for grading and seed selection. Generally, 5 mm and 7 mm screens are used. First use the 7 mm screen for screening, select the seeds, then use the 5 mm screen for screening. Finally, the small and light seeds left behind are not suitable for sowing; generally, the first two types are used for sowing.

3. Soaking the seeds to promote germination

After selecting seeds that are large and heavy, plump, disease-free and undamaged, the step of soaking the seeds to promote germination can be carried out. There are two methods for soaking the seeds to promote germination. One is to soak the seeds in warm water at 30-40 degrees for 6-8 hours so they absorb enough water, then remove them and let them dry slightly, then place them in a greenhouse environment at 25-30 degrees. They can be covered with a wet towel, rinsed once a day, and kept moist to avoid overheating that causes seed rot. The second is to place the seeds in layers with wet sand at a ratio of 1:5 so they absorb water and germinate. Whichever method is used, temperature, moisture and ventilation must be maintained. Once most of the seeds begin to sprout, they can be sown.

4. Coating and seed dressing

Before sowing, coat the seeds with a fludioxonil suspension seed coating agent. The general dosage is 0.3% of the seed amount. At sowing, use organic fertilizer and chemicals for seed dressing. Dressing with organic fertilizer can promote rapid germination, and dressing with chemicals can prevent and control most diseases. Generally, for each mu, 1 kg of phosphorus and potassium fertilizer is used for seed dressing. There are many choices of chemicals, which can be combined as you see fit, but pay attention to the concentration to avoid chemical injury to the seeds and affect germination.
