A Detailed Guide to Rapeseed Cultivation Methods and Precautions

Precautions for Growing Rapeseed

Rapeseed is a vegetable of the genus Brassica, belonging to the cruciferous family. Rapeseed is very common in our daily lives. You may not know that rapeseed flowers are the flowers of the rapeseed plant. The flower stalks and seeds of rapeseed are both extremely useful: the flower stalks can be eaten, and the seeds can be dried and pressed into rapeseed oil. Rapeseed contains relatively rich plant fiber, which can promote digestion. So what should we pay attention to when growing rapeseed? Let's take a look together below.

1. Light

Both the duration and intensity of light will have a certain effect on the growth of each part of the rapeseed plant. If there is not enough light during the growth process, the roots of the rapeseed will extend and expand more slowly. This affects the roots' nutrient absorption and transport, hinders later growth, and reduces yield. Sufficient light greatly promotes the growth of rapeseed, enhances leaf photosynthesis, and increases nutrient accumulation.

2. Water

When rapeseed grows well, the plants are relatively large and the leaves are relatively lush, so the water required for growth is also relatively high. However, the water requirement differs at each growth stage. For example, during the seedling stage, the water requirement is not great; it is enough to moisten the soil when the temperature is relatively high and the soil is dry. The flowering stage is the stage with the greatest water requirement. During this stage, we must ensure that the moisture content in the field is not lower than 75%.

3. Soil

Every part of rapeseed except the roots can be eaten. It is a taproot crop. The roots of rapeseed are very strong, with many branches, and the main root can penetrate deep into the soil. Therefore, rapeseed must be planted in fertile soil that is deep, rich in organic matter, and has strong water- and fertilizer-retention capacity. Soil with a slightly acidic pH is more suitable for the growth of rapeseed and can increase the oil content in rapeseed seeds.

4. Temperature

Rapeseed prefers cool conditions and cannot tolerate high temperatures. It is a very cold-tolerant vegetable. According to experiments, rapeseed seeds can germinate and emerge normally even at 4°C. However, the most suitable temperature for rapeseed growth is around 22°C, and each growth stage has different temperature requirements. The suitable temperature during the flowering stage is around 17°C, and slightly lower during the development stage. It is also necessary to ensure a relatively large day-night temperature difference so that rapeseed can grow better, accumulate more nutrients in the plant, and improve quality.

5. Boron fertilizer

Rapeseed has a great demand for boron fertilizer, but no matter where it is, the boron element in the soil is almost negligible. In addition, a boron deficiency during rapeseed growth can cause the plant to only flower without setting fruit, so we must pay attention to the application of boron fertilizer during management. If the base fertilizer lacks boron fertilizer, then foliar fertilizer should be sprayed during the flowering stage.

The above five points are the precautions for growing rapeseed. Planting is simple, but management is not easy. In particular, the application of boron fertilizer is the most important. Other crops may not have a high demand for boron fertilizer, but it is essential for rapeseed, so everyone must pay attention to applying boron fertilizer. Only then can rapeseed grow and develop better and increase yield. This article is for reference only. If you want to learn more related information, please continue to follow us!
