Dwarf sunflowers are annual herbaceous flowers of the genus Helianthus in the Asteraceae family. The plants are short, with dense branches and leaves, and large blooms. There are many varieties with a rich range of colors, including dark red, brown, copper, golden yellow, lemon yellow and creamy white. They have high ornamental value and can be grown in pots or in the ground, making them excellent material for flower beds, flower borders and holiday floral displays.
1. Variety selection: Choose the Big Smile variety among dwarf sunflowers. This variety grows 30 to 40 cm tall, with flowers 10 to 17 cm across, single petals in bright golden yellow and a black center. It usually blooms 50 to 55 days after sowing and is suitable for pot culture and flower bed planting.
2. Raising seedlings: Propagation is by sowing, generally carried out in April. The optimum temperature for germination is 15 to 18°C. Shallow pots or shallow boxes can be used for sowing, and the medium should be loose, with good water retention and sterile. Sow in individual spots, with 2 seeds per hole. After sowing, cover with 1 to 2 cm of medium to maintain the moisture needed for germination, increase stability during the seedling stage and reduce the occurrence of seedlings with shells still attached. Germination generally occurs 7 to 14 days after sowing. After emergence, pay attention to ventilation and cooling, control humidity and gradually expose the seedlings to light.
3. Planting out and care: Once the seedlings have all emerged, thin them out gradually, leaving 1 plant per hole. They can be planted out when the seedlings are 7 to 8 cm tall. A sandy soil rich in humus and with good drainage is best for the pot. When planting out, apply sufficient base fertilizer at the bottom of the pot. When lifting the seedlings, keep as much soil around them as possible and damage the roots as little as possible, so the plants recover quickly. Dwarf sunflowers like a sunny, warm environment and are not tolerant of shade or cold. During the growing period, fertilize once every 20 days, but before flowering, apply 2 to 3 additional light applications of phosphorus and potassium fertilizer. Keep the soil consistently moist; especially in summer during high temperatures and drought, water promptly. To promote strong growth and development of the terminal bud on the main stem, the side (axillary) buds can be removed. For those with slightly taller stems, set up stakes to prevent them from being blown over by the wind. Hand-pollinate when in bloom to improve the seed-setting rate.
4. Pest and disease control: Common diseases include powdery mildew and black spot. When powdery mildew occurs, white round powdery spots begin to form on the leaves, and after they expand they join together into a single patch; later, small brown dots appear on the powdery layer, and the plant stops growing. When black spot occurs, dark brown or pale yellow spots of varying sizes appear on the leaves, later developing into brown spots; the spots join together into large patches, causing the leaves to turn black and die. When the disease occurs, remove the affected plant remains and spray 75% chlorothalonil wettable powder at 500 times dilution or 70% thiophanate-methyl wettable powder at 800 times dilution for control. The main insect pests are plant bugs and red spider mites, which can be controlled by spraying 40% omethoate emulsifiable concentrate at 800 times dilution or 73% propargite emulsifiable concentrate at 1500 times dilution.
