How do you identify the symptoms of barley stripe disease? Barley stripe disease is a disease caused by systemic infection from seed-borne bacteria. Seedlings can develop the disease as soon as the 1st to 2nd young leaves emerge. Initially, there are pale yellow spots or short small stripes, and later the lesions gradually expand. By the tillering stage, slender stripes parallel to the leaf veins form from the leaf base all the way to the leaf tip, and the color gradually changes from pale to yellow-brown. From jointing to the heading stage, large amounts of mold-like material grow on the stripes, namely the pathogen's conidiophores and conidia. In severe cases, the diseased leaves split and dry up, and the whole plant dies. The color and shape of the stripes vary depending on the variety. The stripes on the leaf sheath and stem are small, and the number of conidia produced is also low. The conidia produced on diseased plants can, when field conditions are suitable, invade the leaves and cause repeated infection, producing small dark brown lesions, but the lesions do not expand and later disappear. Diseased plants are shorter than healthy plants and die early.
