Yam plant death has now been found to be very serious. What causes yam plant death and how should it be treated?
The main causes of severe yam plant death are fusarium wilt, anthracnose and brown rot. These three diseases are mainly spread through rainwater and irrigation, and the current period of high temperatures and frequent rain also creates conditions for the occurrence of these three diseases.
In the early stage of fusarium wilt, the main symptom is spindle-shaped brown patches appearing at the base of the stem. The lesions gradually spread outward, causing the epidermis at the base of the stem to rot, the upper leaves to yellow and drop off, and the vines to wither and die. The interior of the diseased stem turns brown, and infection of the tuberous roots causes round to irregular brown lesions to form around the lenticels. Growers can use a 1000-fold dilution of 50% chlorobromoisocyanuric acid, or a 600-fold dilution of 40% thiophanate-methyl sulfur suspension concentrate, or a 500-fold dilution of 70% mancozeb for root drenching.
Brown spot disease of yam mainly damages the leaves and stems. The lesions on the leaves are round to oval, grayish white to dark gray in the center with a dark brown edge, and small black spots form on the diseased area in the later stage; the lesions on the stems are irregular patches that are grayish white in the center and black around the edges, and in severe cases the lesions join together until the whole plant turns black and dies. Growers can use a 1500-fold dilution of 25% prochloraz mixed with a 1500-fold dilution of 10% difenoconazole for prevention and control.
Brown rot mainly damages the tubers of yam. After the tubers are infected, the diseased area appears as irregular brown lesions with a rotten appearance. Growers can use a 1000-fold dilution of 70% thiophanate-methyl or a 3000-fold dilution of 80% ethylicin for root drenching to prevent and control it.
