What causes the cracking of radish fleshy roots?
How can radishes be grown for high yields? Please advise. To grow radishes for high yields, you can refer to the following cultivation techniques: (1) Site selection: For growing radishes, choose fields that consume little fertilizer, are rich in organic matter, and have no same-type pests or diseases. For autumn and winter radishes, the previous crop should preferably be melons or solanaceous and cucurbit crops. For vegetable plots in outer suburban counties, in addition to the above-mentioned types of fields...
Why do radish fleshy roots crack? Please explain.Physiologically, the cracking of radish fleshy roots is generally considered to result from uneven soil moisture supply during radish growth. That is, when radishes encounter high temperatures and drought during the growing period, insufficient soil moisture causes the tissue of the cortex of the fleshy root to gradually harden. In the middle and later stages of radish growth, when the temperature is suitable, sunlight is adequate, and moisture is sufficient, under such good conditions the parenchyma cells of the xylem inside the fleshy root divide and expand rapidly, rapidly increasing and swelling horizontally toward the cortex, while the hardened cortex cannot grow correspondingly, creating a conflict. The hardened cortex cannot withstand the internal force expanding outward through the cortex, and as a result, the cortex is split open. In addition, excessively sticky or hard soil, or overly coarse sand particles, a high groundwater table, and other environmental conditions, as well as underground pests such as the larvae of the striped flea beetle biting and feeding on the outer skin of the root, can all leave small marks on the root surface, and together with the action of harmful substances, leave unsightly black streaks.
How can cracking and rough skin be prevented? The most basic approach is still to select good soil, turn and sun it thoroughly, cultivate it carefully and intensively, keep the soil loose at all times, and create a good soil environment. In terms of management, according to the weather and the performance of radish growth, supply water evenly and in a timely manner, so that the soil remains moist yet breathable. During radish growth and the formation of the fleshy root, there should be no shortage of water, nutrients, or air, and the roots should not be compressed by the soil. Be sure to avoid alternating dry and wet conditions or long periods without watering.
