To cultivate strong Welsh onion seedlings in autumn, the following key technical points should be grasped:
1. Variety selection. In Luannan County, the main Welsh onion varieties chosen are Liaocong No. 1 and Tangcong, which have good cold resistance, long white stalks, lodging resistance, high yield and good quality.
2. Sowing period. Welsh onion has very strict requirements for the sowing period, generally sown at the end of September of the previous year. If sown too early, the seedlings are large before winter and easily pass through vernalization, causing early bolting in the spring of the second year, so strong seedlings cannot be cultivated; if sown too late, the seedlings are thin and weak before winter and easily die during overwintering.
3. Seedbed selection. Choose flat, well-ventilated, sunny, fertile soil with loose texture close to a water source. Never grow seedlings in the same plot in successive rotations; for plots with underground pests, chemical control should be applied.
4. Land preparation and fertilization. Apply 15-20 kg of potassium sulfate compound fertilizer per mu as a base fertilizer. Make beds about 1 m wide and 7 m long for easy management. The area ratio of seedbed to planting field is 1:6 to 1:4. Calculated by sowing rate, 500 g of seed can plant 1000 sq m, equivalent to 0.35 kg of seed per mu.
5. Seed soaking and germination. Before sowing, soak the seeds in cold water for 8-10 hours, remove them, wrap them in a clean wet cloth, and place them at 15°C-20°C to germinate. Rinse once a day with clean water. After about 6 days, when the radicle emerges, sow promptly.
6. Sowing method. To make the seedlings grow uniformly, drill sowing is best. Open shallow furrows 1.5-2 cm deep at a row spacing of 10-15 cm, irrigate along the furrows, and after the water infiltrates, sow evenly in the furrows. After sowing the whole bed, level the bed surface.
7. Seedling management. From sowing to emergence, keep the ground moist at all times to prevent soil crusting. When the young shoots emerge, water once to straighten the cotyledons and stabilize the seedlings. After that, according to soil moisture, water 1-2 more times lightly; the amount of water must not be too much, to avoid excessive seedling growth, and pay attention to timely cultivating and weeding. Before the seedlings overwinter, water once with wintering water, or cover with a layer of manure soil to help raise soil temperature and ensure the seedlings overwinter safely. After turning green, water once with greening water. As the temperature rises and the seedlings enter the peak growth period, combine watering with 2-3 topdressings, and carry out weeding and thinning. After the second thinning, properly control water to prevent the onion seedlings from lodging. 10 days before transplanting, appropriately restrain growth to harden the onion seedlings.
