When growing cucumbers in a greenhouse, pay attention to the following points:
First, do not arbitrarily change the light-receiving angle of the greenhouse. The angle of the solar greenhouse currently used for growing cucumbers has undergone long-term scientific verification; its north-south span, height and rear slope angle should not be changed arbitrarily.
Second, do not apply concentrated fertilizer at transplanting. Various chemical fertilizers, especially nitrogen fertilizers, produce large amounts of harmful gases under humid and high-temperature conditions. If applied in a concentrated manner in the transplanting furrow, they can cause cucumber root burn and seedling death.
Third, do not transplant too deep. Everyone knows that cucumbers are grafted for disease resistance. If the seedlings are transplanted too deep, the cucumber will produce adventitious roots, lose the effect of grafting, and fail to achieve the purpose of grafting.
Fourth, do not leave the straw mats unrolled on cloudy, rainy or snowy days. People often think that rolling up the straw mats on cloudy, rainy or snowy days will lower the temperature in the greenhouse, so they do not roll them up. In fact, this practice causes more harm. If the straw mats are not rolled up, the temperature will only drop slowly, and because the cucumbers cannot see sunlight for a long time, it will cause physiological disorder.
Fifth, do not apply large amounts of nitrogen fertilizer in winter. After nitrogen fertilizer meets water, during its dispersal process it will cause the water temperature to drop substantially, which lowers the ground temperature and affects the normal growth of cucumber vines.
Sixth, do not apply undecomposed organic fertilizer. Organic fertilizer will ferment quickly after encountering high temperatures, and during the fermentation process it will produce large amounts of ammonia gas. In mild cases it decomposes the nitrogen fertilizer in the greenhouse; in severe cases it can kill all the cucumber seedlings in the greenhouse.
Seventh, do not spray pesticides at noon or in the evening. Spraying at noon, when the temperature in the greenhouse is too high and leaf moisture transpires quickly, means the pesticide dries before it is absorbed, especially zinc-based pesticides, which can cause phytotoxicity. Spraying in the evening is exactly the opposite of noon: because after spraying it is not completely absorbed by the cucumber leaves, it will decompose and lose effectiveness due to moisture, failing to achieve the treatment purpose and instead worsening the occurrence of disease. Eighth, do not lower the vines too short. Lowering the vines too short all at once will sharply reduce the leaf area receiving light and affect the normal growth of cucumber vines.
