Garlic mosaic virus disease: 1. Symptoms
In the early stage of the disease, intermittent yellow dotted lines appear along the leaf veins, which later connect into long stripes of alternating yellow and green. Plants become stunted, and the central leaves of some plants are wrapped by adjacent leaves, showing curled deformity and unable to fully extend for a long time, causing leaf distortion. The bulbs of diseased plants become smaller, or the number of cloves and fibrous roots decreases. In severe cases, the cloves become hard, which is especially obvious during storage. Garlic yield and quality decline significantly, causing seed degeneration.
It is caused by Garlic mosaic virus (GMV) and Garlic latent virus (GLV). Sowing virus-carrying bulbs leads to infection after emergence. In the field, it is mainly transmitted non-persistently by green peach aphids and onion aphids, and also by sap rubbing. Poor management conditions, large aphid populations, and continuous cropping or adjacent cropping with other Allium plants lead to more severe disease. Because garlic is propagated asexually, using bulbs as planting material, the virus carried by the plant can be transmitted to the next generation along with its vegetative cloves for a long time, resulting in widespread virus infection of field plants, and the virus multiplication coefficient continues to expand, causing garlic to degenerate and become smaller.
2. Control methods
Strictly select seeds, establish a foundation seed base as much as possible, and use bulbs from garlic in lightly diseased areas as seeds to reduce the virus-carrying rate of bulbs. In vitro culture of garlic shoot apical meristem can be used to remove the virus from garlic bulbs and produce virus-free garlic seeds. Avoid adjacent cropping or continuous cropping with Welsh onion, Chinese chives and other plants to reduce natural virus transmission in the field.
Spray insecticides in garlic fields and surrounding crops to control aphids and prevent repeated virus infection.
Strengthen fertilizer and water management, avoid premature aging, and improve plant disease resistance. At the early stage of the disease, start spraying 1.5% Zhibingling emulsifiable concentrate at 1000 times dilution or 20% Virus A wettable powder at 500 times dilution, or Antiviral Agent No. 1 aqueous solution at 250-300 times dilution, once every 10 days, for 2-3 consecutive treatments.
