How to manage water and fertilizer well when growing garlic?
How should base fertilizer be applied when planting garlic? Please advise. Garlic has string-like fibrous roots; its ability to absorb water and nutrients is relatively weak, and the bulb grows and swells in the soil, so garlic should be cultivated on plots with loose soil, good drainage and rich organic matter. Although garlic is fairly adaptable, sandy loam is still best. Because sandy...
How to manage water and fertilizer well when growing garlic? Please advise. When the garlic sprouts have 2-3 leaves, apply a seedling fertilizer, usually 1500 kg of diluted manure water or 30 kg of ammonium bicarbonate dissolved in water and sprinkled on, together with one light watering. After that, water once between "Minor Snow" and "Major Snow" to protect against freezing. Around "Spring Equinox" the next year, when temperatures begin to rise and the garlic sprouts start growing again, choose a clear day and water once at noon with a "greening water" to promote the sprouts to green up in time, then control water appropriately to promote root development and the differentiation of the scape and bulb. After entering April, the garlic sprouts enter their peak growth period, so water thoroughly every 7-10 days and combine this with topdressing, applying 25-30 kg of urea per mu or 15-20 kg of ammonium bicarbonate per mu. From early May to around the 20th is the peak growth period of the garlic scape; during this period keep the ground moist, generally watering once every 5-7 days, and stop watering 5 days before scape extraction to make pulling the scapes easier. During the scape-extraction period, apply 25-30 kg per mu of a nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium compound fertilizer with the irrigation to promote scape growth. After pulling the scapes, water promptly; by this time the growth center has shifted to the garlic bulb, so keep the ground alternately dry and moist to promote bulb swelling, and stop watering 3 days before harvest.
