When tomatoes fail to turn red for a long time because the temperature does not meet the requirement for lycopene development, using a chemical ripening agent on the plant is an effective measure to promote earlier marketing of tomatoes. However, in the actual ripening process, improper handling often inhibits plant growth, and in some cases causes chemical damage. Therefore, when using a chemical ripening agent, pay attention to the following:
(1) Do not ripen too early. Generally, the best ripening effect is achieved when the fruit has fully enlarged and the fruit color has turned from white to a fried-rice color. If the fruit is at the green-ripe stage and has not fully enlarged but you are eager to ripen it, uneven coloring and stiff fruit are likely to occur.
(2) The chemical concentration should not be too high. If the tomato ripening solution concentration is too high, it will damage the basal leaves and cause the leaves to turn yellow. Usually, use 50 milliliters of 40% ethephon added to 4 kilograms of water, mix thoroughly and evenly, then use.
(3) Do not ripen too many fruits at one time. Generally, it is best to ripen 1 to 2 fruits per plant each time, because if too many fruits are ripened on a single plant, the amount of chemical received is too large and chemical damage is likely to occur.
(4) The ripening solution must not touch the leaves. During the ripening process, apply the chemical carefully. You can use a small piece of sponge dipped in the solution to smear the fruit surface; you can also wear cotton yarn gloves dipped in the solution and wipe the fruit surface with your hands.
