Raising tomato seedlings by green branch cuttings is a seedling-raising method that uses side branches from mature tomato plants that have already flowered and fruited for asexual propagation. After nearly three years of practice, I have found three major benefits:
First, it can save seed investment. Especially for expensive imported varieties, using green branch cuttings for seedling raising can greatly save the cost of buying seeds. Second, it can shorten the growth cycle. The tomato cuttings come from mature plants that are flowering and fruiting, which have already undergone good vegetative growth and flower bud differentiation and entered the reproductive growth stage. Compared with raising seedlings by sowing, tomato cultivation from green branch cuttings significantly shortens the growth process, and the fruit can be marketed 40 to 45 days earlier. Third, it can greatly increase yield. In tomato cultivation from green branch cuttings, the plant internodes are shorter, the inflorescences increase, the fruit is round and regular, and the yield can be about 10% higher than that of cultivation from sowing.
The technical key points of raising tomato seedlings by green branch cuttings are: First, from the middle and lower parts of mature tomato plants that have already flowered and fruited, select side branches that are disease-free, robust, have intact growing points, are about 15cm long, and have 4 to 5 leaves. Second, remove the leaves from the lower part of the branch, then cut the lower end of the branch into a smooth wedge shape, treat it with a 50mg/kg naphthaleneacetic acid solution for 10 minutes, rinse it clean with clear water, and set it aside. Third, build in advance suitable protective facilities for tomato seedling raising, prepare the seedbed well, and after disinfection, insert the prepared branches at a spacing of 12cm x 12cm between plants and rows, with a depth of 5cm. After inserting, water thoroughly, cover with plastic film, and ensure the humidity is not lower than 95%. Fourth, in the first week after insertion, provide appropriate shade and ensure suitable temperature and humidity. When humidity is low, promptly spray clear water onto the seedbed. In the second week, appropriately increase light and provide moderate ventilation. If slight wilting is found, promptly spray clear water. In the third week, gradually remove the plastic film, and harden the seedlings one week before transplanting. In addition, spray foliar fertilizer once a week after insertion. If vegetable growers do not believe it, they can give it a try.
