The quality of tomato seeds mainly depends on seed plumpness, germination rate, germination vigor and seed purity.
(1) Plumpness. This refers to how plump the seeds are. It is generally expressed by 1000-seed weight, i.e. the weight of 1000 seeds (grams). The greater the 1000-seed weight, the plumper the seeds. The average 1000-seed weight of tomato seeds is about 3.1 grams.
(2) Germination rate. This refers to the percentage of germinable seeds in a seed sample. The germination rate of tomato seeds is required to reach more than 90%.
(3) Germination vigor. This refers to the percentage of germinated seeds out of the tested seeds within a specified number of days. It is a quantitative indicator of seed germination speed, uniformity and concentration of germination. The specified number of days for measuring tomato seed germination vigor is 5 days.
(4) Seed purity. This refers to the percentage of plants conforming to the characteristics of this variety out of the total number of identified plants. The purity of tomato seeds is required to reach more than 95%. Hybrid varieties are divided into first-grade seeds and second-grade seeds. The purity of first-grade seeds shall not be less than 98.0%, and the purity of second-grade seeds shall not be less than 95.0%.
