Seed dormancy is the phenomenon in which viable seeds, for internal reasons, still fail to germinate under suitable environmental conditions. Effectively breaking dormancy is a very important issue in production, and it directly affects uniform and strong seedlings. We have summarized several methods for breaking tomato seed dormancy, described below.
1. The tomato seed coat contains germination inhibitors. Before sowing, soak the seeds in water and rinse them repeatedly; running water is even better. This allows the inhibitors to leach out and can increase the germination rate.
2. New seeds harvested in the same year, after 12 hours of aerated water uptake and then drying back to a certain moisture content, that is, pre-soaking, can effectively break the shallow dormancy of tomato seeds, shorten the seed germination time, improve germination uniformity, and increase the length of the seedling main root.
3. Adding 500 ppm gibberellin to the seedling substrate can also play a role in breaking shallow seed dormancy. Pre-soaking and the use of gibberellin have no obvious effect on the viability of tomato seeds.
