For onions planted before winter, apply the green-up water in spring. The timing of the green-up water must be right: watering too early lowers the soil temperature, which is bad for onion growth, while watering too late also inhibits plant growth and causes dry leaf tips.
When the onion bulbs begin to swell, control water and root-train the plants. The length of the root-training period should be adjusted flexibly according to the soil, climate and plant growth conditions. On sandy soil or in dry weather, the root-training period should be shortened appropriately; on clay soil, in low-lying terrain or in rainy conditions, it should be extended appropriately. The aim is to promote the shift in onion growth toward bulb swelling; this stage generally takes about 10 days. It is generally considered that when the mature tubular leaves of the onion turn dark green, the leaf flesh becomes thick, the waxy coating on the leaf surface increases and the color of the heart leaves deepens, this marks the end of root training at this stage. After root training, water generally every 5 days to promote rapid bulb swelling. When some plants in the field lodge, stop watering so that the bulbs keep well after harvest.
