How do you grow onions in autumn? Here are the methods
For autumn onion planting, you can refer to the following methods:
Sow at the right time. If sown too early, the seedlings grow vigorously before winter and are prone to early bolting; if sown too late, it is not conducive to the seedlings overwintering. Generally, sowing in mid-September is best; the earliest should not be earlier than September 1, and the latest should not be later than October 5.
Transplant at the right time. If sown at the right time, transplanting is generally done in early to mid-November, no later than November 25, with an average daily temperature of about 10°C being suitable. At this time, the base of the seedling stem is 0.5 cm thick, with 3-4 true leaves, a seedling age of 40-50 days, and 3-4 new roots can grow before the soil freezes, which helps ensure safe overwintering.
Field management. Before transplanting, do a good job of cultivating strong seedlings and controlling underground pests, and control watering and fertilizing. If the seedlings turn yellow, you can spray a 0.3% urea water solution on the leaves. Before freezing, water thoroughly for overwintering; after green-up, water once for green-up; after the leaves enter the vigorous growth period, apply 15 kg of urea per mu. 50 days after green-up and before bulb expansion, apply another 10 kg of urea and 15-20 kg of potassium sulfate per mu. If bolting plants are found, you can split the flower stalk from the middle to promote bulb expansion.
