Loofah is deeply loved by people for its crisp texture and sweet taste. Summer loofah is planted from late April to early July and comes to market from June to October. The management techniques are as follows:
Fertilizer and water management. During the seedling stage of summer loofah, apply manure water 2-3 times. At the early flowering stage, apply a heavy topdressing, applying 50 kg of compound fertilizer or 50 kg of peanut bran per mu, and after every 2-3 harvests, apply another topdressing, each time using 15 kg of compound fertilizer, 10 kg of urea, and 5 kg of potash fertilizer. When spraying foliar fertilizer, add New High Lipid Film to enhance fertilizer efficiency and suppress and reduce pests and diseases. During the seedling stage of summer loofah, the water must not be too much; too much is not conducive to root growth. The vine elongation and flowering stage requires more water, so on sunny days water in the morning and evening. During the harvest period, in addition to watering, a 10-20 cm water layer should be kept in the furrow, and in rainy weather drainage should be done promptly. Before flowering, at the young fruit stage, and at the fruit enlargement stage, spray Caiguo Zhuangdiling once each time to strengthen seedlings and fruit stems and protect flowers and fruits.
Field management. Insert bamboo stakes to guide the vines. When the vine grows to 30 cm, bamboo stakes can be inserted to form an A-frame trellis. After inserting the trellis, do not guide the vines immediately; allow the vines to coil and press appropriately, and when female flowers appear, guide the vines upward and distribute the vines evenly. Hanging the melons. When loofah bends, it should be hung: tie one end of a small packing rope to the melon stem and the other end to a small stone to pull the melon straight, generally done 2-3 days after picking the melon. Remove old leaves. In the late harvest period of summer loofah, the diseased leaves and old leaves below affect ventilation and easily spread diseases, so they should be removed promptly.
Harvest promptly. Summer loofah takes 35-45 days from planting to the first harvest, with a harvest period of 50-60 days. From flower opening to harvesting the commercial melon takes about 10-12 days, so harvesting must be timely.
