Ginger has different watering requirements at different growth stages. When sowing, the soil must be watered thoroughly with bottom water; usually, the first watering is not started until about 70% of the seedlings have emerged. After this watering, the soil needs to be kept moist frequently to prevent the soil surface from crusting, which would affect seedling emergence. In the early seedling stage, light watering is preferable, and after watering, when the soil is at the dry-wet boundary, shallow hoeing should be carried out. In the late seedling stage, which falls in the hot summer season, the weather is dry and hot and soil evaporation is high, so the frequency of watering should be appropriately increased, and the soil relative humidity should be kept at 65%-70% regularly.
In summer, watering in the morning or evening is best; do not water at noon. In addition, after heavy rain, water should be applied as a run-through watering to lower the temperature, and drainage should be carried out promptly to prevent waterlogging in the ginger field, which can cause the ginger rhizomes to rot. During the vigorous growth period, generally water heavily once every 4-6 days, regularly keeping the soil relative humidity at 75%-85%. 3-4 days before harvest, water once more so that the ginger rhizomes can carry moist soil at harvest, which is beneficial for storage in the cellar.
