         The germination bed for chili pepper seeds is gauze or filter paper, with the germination vigor calculated at 6 days and the germination rate at 14 days. In the gauze or filter paper method, moisture is difficult to control, the seeds are prone to mildew and rot, and it takes a long time. Using the towel roll germination method, however, is simple and quick to perform (germination vigor recorded at 4 days, germination rate recorded at 7 days) and highly accurate (with an error within ±2% compared with the standard method), making it a relatively ideal germination bed. Therefore, the towel roll rapid seed germination method can be used for indoor testing of chili pepper seeds. The specific procedure is as follows:
1. Boil the reserved towel in advance to disinfect it, take it out and let it cool to room temperature, wring it dry until no water drips, and it is enough for it to be slightly damp;
2. From the good seeds that have passed the purity test, randomly count out 4 samples, 100 seeds per sample, 400 seeds in total;
3. Lay the 4 sterilized wet towels on the tabletop, and arrange the seeds neatly on half of each towel. Keep a distance between seeds at least equal to the size of the seeds, and leave about 1.5 cm empty at the edges. Then cover the seeds with the remaining half, place a bamboo chopstick in the middle, carefully roll the wet towel into a rod shape, fasten both ends firmly with rubber bands, put it into an air-filled plastic bag, tie the bag opening tightly, and attach a label noting the bedding time, variety, number of replicates, etc. Finally, place the 4 replicates into a 30°C germination box until germination is complete, with no need to add water;
4. When the test reaches the 4th day and the 7th day, check the seed germination of the 4 towels respectively. Take their average as the germination vigor and germination rate of that batch of seeds. When checking germination vigor and germination rate, apart from seedlings with broken roots or sprouts needing to be counted as normally germinated seeds, the other standards are exactly the same as the standard method.
