What temperature is suitable for asparagus seed germination? Please explain
For asparagus seed germination, 5°C is the minimum threshold; when the soil temperature drops below 5°C, the seeds almost do not germinate, and below 15°C the germination rate and germination vigor decrease markedly. Therefore, in regions with low temperatures, after sowing in early spring a considerable amount of time is needed before germination occurs, and attention must be paid to taking certain measures before sowing as well as providing certain insulation treatment after sowing.
The most suitable temperature for vegetable seed germination is 20-25°C, at which the germination rate can reach over 90%. If soaked and swollen seeds are placed in a 25°C environment, germination begins after about 3 days, and after 10 days most of the seeds have germinated. Under conditions of 25-30°C, germination begins slightly earlier, but the germination period is prolonged, and the germination vigor is poorer than at 20-25°C. Under conditions above 30°C, the seed germination rate and germination vigor decrease markedly, and above 35°C germination basically stops.
The germination vigor and germination rate of asparagus seeds are very low at higher temperatures, which may be related to the rapid decrease in a-amylase activity with prolonged germination acceleration time at high temperatures. Within a certain temperature range, the germination rate of alternating-temperature germination acceleration is better than that of constant-temperature germination acceleration, and the effect of alternating day/night temperature treatment is particularly obvious. Using an alternating-temperature germination acceleration treatment of 25°C during the day and 20°C at night, the germination rate can reach as high as 98%.
