How to grow sweet waxy corn well? Please advise
Sweet waxy corn has excellent palatability, a soft and delicate texture, thick kernels with thin skins, and a fresh, fragrant flavor. When harvested for fresh eating, the young ears can be sold directly right away or preserved through quick-freezing, vacuum packaging, and other fresh-keeping processing, which maintains their original shape, color, nutrition, and quality for year-round marketing. After maturity, the grains harvested from waxy corn can be processed into waxy corn grits for cooking porridge, or processed into waxy corn flour for making various foods. Generally, the yield of fresh ears is over 800 kg per mu; spring sowing takes 90 days from emergence to harvest, and autumn sowing about 75 days.
Cultivation key points:
1. It should be planted in isolation from other corn (300 m) to prevent cross-pollination.
2. Sow in stages and harvest in batches to ensure good quality and a high price. For sowing from late February to early March, adopt double-film mulching with pre-sprouted seed, or raise seedlings in soft trays after sprouting. After early April, pre-sprouted seed can be sown directly in the open field. For early autumn, sow from mid-July to early August.
3. Plant in wide and narrow rows. Wide rows 80 cm, narrow rows 50 cm, plant (hill) spacing 27 cm, 3500 hills per mu, sow 2 pre-sprouted seeds per hill, thin to a single plant at the 4-leaf stage, leaving 1 strong seedling per hill. Keep about 3500 plants per mu.
4. Base the fertilization mainly on organic fertilizer and apply sufficient basal fertilizer. Apply 1500 kg of pig and cattle manure or 80 kg of compound fertilizer per mu; apply seedling fertilizer early at the 4-5 leaf stage; at the 9-leaf stage (large trumpet stage), apply 15-20 kg of urea per mu as ear fertilizer.
5. Pay attention to using "Jinggangmycin" to control sheath blight and "Regent" to control corn borer.
6. Carry out artificial supplementary pollination during the peak pollen-shedding period.
7. Harvest about 23-25 days after pollination. If fresh ears of waxy corn sell slowly for a time, you can wait until maturity and harvest the grains for further food processing.
8. The green young stems and leaves after harvest can be used as green fodder for cattle, sheep, and fish.
