For summer carrot planting, you can refer to the following methods:
1. Fine soil preparation
Carrots are fleshy-root vegetables and prefer deep, loose soil. The soil should be deeply tilled, to a depth of no less than 30 cm. Fine cultivation is required, so that the soil is fine and crumbly, the ground is level, and the soil moisture is good. It is best to form beds 2-2.5 m wide to facilitate irrigation and drainage.
2. Apply base fertilizer well
To prevent organic fertilizer from burning the seedlings, it must be fully decomposed and crushed before application. Along with soil preparation, apply 2500-3000 kg of decomposed organic fertilizer and 50-80 kg of ternary compound fertilizer per mu.
3. Control underground pests
To control damage from underground pests, mix an appropriate amount of insecticide into the organic fertilizer; this has a good effect on preserving a full stand of seedlings.
4. Seed treatment
First rub off the prickly hairs on the dry seeds to help the seeds make close contact with the soil. Before sowing, soak the seeds in 40°C hot water for 30 minutes, then add cold water to bring the water temperature down to 20°C-25°C, and soak for 24 hours. After the seeds have fully absorbed water, remove them and sprout them. The suitable temperature for sprouting is 20°C-25°C. When more than half of the seeds have small sprouts showing, sow them in time. Experiments show that sowing after seed treatment can produce seedlings 2-5 days earlier and increase seedling emergence by 6.4%-9.6%.
5. Chemical weed control
Applying a pre-emergence herbicide in time after sowing and covering with soil not only eliminates the large amount of labor needed for manual weeding, but also gives a good weeding effect. You can choose herbicide varieties that are safe for carrots and have a good weeding effect, such as linuron, pendimethalin, and napropamide. Use 100-150 ml of herbicide emulsifiable concentrate per mu, mix with 60-80 kg of water, and spray evenly over the ground; the weed control effect reaches more than 95%.
6. Cover with grass to preserve seedlings
After spraying the herbicide, evenly cover the bed surface with a 2-3 cm thick layer of short wheat straw. This can prevent soil crusting caused by heavy rain from affecting seedling emergence, and can also provide shade and preserve soil moisture to prevent the seeds from drying out. The covering has a good effect on preserving a full stand of seedlings.
