In some regions, farmers harvest winter wheat and immediately dibble-sow summer corn; farmers call this period the "three summer" rush of seeding and harvesting. Since it is a double rush, there is no time to plow or prepare the land, so summer corn cannot be given seed fertilizer. In other regions, corn is relay intercropped before the wheat is harvested. The common feature of these two types of regions is that basal fertilizer cannot be applied before sowing summer corn. Therefore, the fertilization of summer corn can only rely on seed fertilizer and topdressing. How should the seed fertilizer and topdressing for summer corn be managed? Here we introduce the fertilization experience of Chen Aiguo, a specialized grower in Wangdu County, Hebei. His specific practice is to apply seed fertilizer together with sowing when sowing summer corn, with a seed fertilizer rate of about 10 kg/mu, using a compound fertilizer with an N-P-K ratio of 15%-10%-15%. The application method is to open a furrow, apply the fertilizer, and then cover it with soil. When the corn seedlings reach the bell-mouth stage, he timely applies a second topdressing, applying 20 kg of urea per mu, placing it in holes, covering with soil, and then irrigating. In the past two years, the summer corn he planted has averaged over 450 kg at harvest, with some reaching a thousand jin.
This fertilization method is worth referencing in the following respects:
1. The timing of the seedling fertilizer is well judged, reflecting the principles that summer corn seedling fertilizer should be applied early and topdressing should be applied at the right time.
2. In terms of fertilizer types, it reflects the characteristic of balanced application of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium nutrients for seedling fertilizer, while also highlighting the characteristic of mainly applying nitrogen fertilizer as topdressing during the vigorous growth period. The first seedling fertilizer applies nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium fertilizer, and the second topdressing heavily applies nitrogen fertilizer.
3. In terms of controlling the fertilization rate, both applications used compound fertilizer and urea. The summer corn yield obtained that year was at a level of 450-500 kg per mu, and this fertilization rate is an economical and optimized reasonable amount
