How do you control the sorghum head borer? Please provide methods.
The sorghum head borer mainly damages sorghum spikelets and grains. Loose-panicle varieties suffer less damage, while tight-panicle varieties suffer more serious damage. Adults lay eggs on the panicle, and after hatching the larvae feed on the grains during the filling stage, causing heavy grain losses. Damage is severe in high-temperature and high-humidity weather. For chemical control, apply the pesticide to the panicle before the larvae reach the third instar.
1. Spray with 40% dimethoate emulsifiable concentrate at a dilution of 1500-2000 times.
2. Put the above pesticide solution in a basin and gently dip the panicle heads so that the solution adheres to the panicles.
3. Put 1.5% dimethoate powder in a gauze bag and dust it onto the panicle heads in the morning while the dew has not yet dried.
4. 1% carbaryl powder, used in the same way as 3.
5. Pyrethroid pesticides are non-toxic to sorghum and can kill many kinds of pests. They can be used together with the control of armyworms, stem borers, aphids, etc. The types and concentrations of pesticides applied are the same as for sorghum aphids.
