Garlic Sprout Cultivation Techniques

Garlic sprouts refer to the young seedlings of garlic, grown by using garlic bulbs under relatively dark conditions. They are now cultivated nationwide. With their bright color, rich aroma and abundant nutrition, they are deeply loved by people and are a common appetite-stimulating and health-promoting vegetable. So do you know how they are grown? Come and take a look at the detailed cultivation methods on Qinnong Web.

1. Seed selection

The output value of garlic sprouts is still relatively high. When selecting seeds, large-clove garlic varieties should be chosen, among which the purple-skinned large six-clove garlic is the best, as its cloves are large, it sprouts quickly after planting, and it has good quality and relatively high yield. Before sowing, first remove frost-damaged, rotten and weak cloves, and select those with large cloves and no disease damage.

2. Planting site

Garlic sprouts are mainly grown in low-temperature seasons, so the planting site can use greenhouses for cultivation, or empty houses and cellars can also be used for planting. When using empty houses and cellars for planting, light a fire inside to raise the temperature and ensure good ventilation conditions. A pool can be built inside, with a cultivation pool height of 60cm; the length and width depend on the planting scale. The pool surface must be flat, spread with sand or a layer of sandy loam, and raked level, then sowing can begin.

3. Sowing

Soak the previously selected garlic heads in clean water for more than ten hours so they absorb enough water, then separate the garlic heads, remove the heel of the stem plate, and place them neatly on the cultivation pool. Garlic cloves can be used to fill gaps, and try not to leave large gaps. After placing them, press flat with a tool, sprinkle fine soil or fine sand once more, then irrigate the cultivation pool with water. Note that water should be poured slowly from the side, and it is not suitable to water directly from above. The water amount should just cover the garlic heads. After irrigation, spread another layer of fine sandy soil, and sowing is complete.

4. Cultivation management

After sowing, strictly control the temperature of the cultivation room, keeping the temperature between 18-22 degrees. It will sprout and emerge from the soil before long. After the young shoots emerge, cover with a curtain to shade light in time, so that the garlic leaves soften and the quality of the garlic sprouts is ensured. Covering with a curtain for shading must be timely. If shading is too late or not tight enough, it will affect the quality of the garlic sprouts. During the day, maintain the temperature at 25-28 degrees, and at night maintain the temperature at 18-20 degrees. Also irrigate in time to ensure sufficient moisture. Generally, irrigate once every 2-3 days, and strengthen ventilation to avoid accumulating a large amount of toxic gas, which would cause the garlic sprouts to die.

5. Timely harvest

When the garlic seedlings grow to 25cm, they can be harvested. Generally, it takes only one month from sowing to harvest. Harvesting should be quick, but it should not be cut too deep. Cutting off only the parts above the ground is enough. Cutting too deep can easily damage the garlic cloves. After harvesting, it is not suitable to irrigate immediately, to avoid wound infection by diseases. Wait 3 days after harvesting before irrigating to promote the growth of the second crop. After about 20 days, they can be harvested again.
