Planting Methods for the Holboellia latifolia

Holboellia latifolia is also called wild banana, and it is also known as Yuzhizi. It is a very important traditional Chinese medicinal herb. Because its fruit splits open in August, people call it "August melon" (bayuegua). Of course, it has different names in different places, and we will not list them all here. In fact, we rarely see the original plant of Holboellia latifolia in daily life, so today let us join Qinongwang and step into the world of growing Holboellia latifolia.

1. Select good varieties

The growth habits of Holboellia latifolia are relatively favorable, and at least it can be grown in most areas of our country. So as for seed selection, just try to choose seeds that are relatively plump, free of pests and diseases, and good in color. Of course, if propagating by root division, you need to choose roots that are relatively vigorous, and if using cuttings, you need to choose seedlings that are relatively thick and strong. Selecting seeds according to different planting methods is the correct way to select.

2. Sow at the right time

Because the growth habit of Holboellia latifolia is that it prefers shade and humidity and has strong cold resistance, we can generally sow from August each year to around March of the following year. Secondly, the sowing time is also somewhat related to the sowing method. For example, when sowing with seeds, it is generally best from August to September; when using cuttings, it can be done all year round; and when using root division, it is from December to March. So the correct sowing time also needs to be determined according to different situations.

Holboellia latifolia generally only needs two rounds of main fertilization, respectively in spring each year and in summer each year. In spring, this is generally when Holboellia latifolia is planted out, and it is best to fertilize after planting out, which is roughly around early March. This fertilization is mainly to make the seedlings grow quickly and shorten the growing period, so urea can be used to promote seedling growth, and a little potassium fertilizer and phosphorus fertilizer should also be used as a supplement. The second fertilization is when Holboellia latifolia sets fruit, generally in June or July. This time we mainly use foliar fertilizer, such as boron fertilizer and the like. Finally, watering is needed each time fertilization is applied, otherwise the seedlings may wither because the nutrients are too abundant.

4. Field management

Field management of Holboellia latifolia mainly consists of intertillage and weeding, trellising, pruning branches and leaves, and water management. We need to maintain soil permeability, so basically two to three rounds of loosening soil and weeding are needed. Trellising is a very important step in field management. It can, to a certain extent, increase the yield of Holboellia latifolia and help avoid the occurrence of some pests and diseases. Generally, trellising is carried out when the vines grow to about fifty cm. After Holboellia latifolia sets fruit, we should begin pruning branches and leaves. During this period, movements must be gentle so as not to damage the fruit. We need to cut off excess branches and leaves, which can maintain a reasonable field density and nutrient absorption. Finally, note that during periods of heavy rainfall, especially around Qingming Festival and during the peak of the summer rainy season, the field drainage system should be handled in time, and accumulated water should be drained from the field promptly.

5. Pest and disease control

Generally speaking, as long as field management and water management are done well, Holboellia latifolia basically has no diseases, so we mainly focus on field prevention. If disease does occur, it is mostly caused by improper field water management, so we can promptly use carbendazim for control. Secondly, there will also be a small number of pests in the field, such as moths, red spiders, and so on. We can use trap-killing methods or use low-toxicity biological pesticides for spraying and killing.
