Polygala tenuifolia Seed Prices and Planting Methods

Polygala tenuifolia, also known as xiaocao, yaorao, jiyuan and so on, is a perennial herb of the genus Polygala in the family Polygalaceae. It is produced in Northeast China, North China, Northwest China, Central China and Sichuan, and grows in grasslands, hillside meadows, shrublands and under mixed forests. Its rhizome is used as medicine and has the effects of calming the nerves and improving intelligence, resolving phlegm and reducing swelling. Let us take a look at Polygala tenuifolia seed prices and planting methods below!

How much does Polygala tenuifolia seed cost per jin?

The price of Polygala tenuifolia seeds is about 90-120 yuan per jin, but prices vary greatly depending on seed quality, variety, place of origin and market. Polygala tenuifolia prefers a cool climate, tolerates drought and dislikes high temperatures. It mostly grows wild in relatively dry fields, roadsides, hillsides and other places, and is best cultivated in sunny, well-drained sandy soil. It can also be cultivated in clay loam and calcareous loam, while clay soil and low-lying wet areas are not suitable for planting. In production, seed propagation is the main method of reproduction, and both direct sowing and seedling transplanting can be used.

Sowing Methods for Polygala tenuifolia

1. Sowing time: For Polygala tenuifolia, spring sowing is carried out in mid-to-late April, and autumn sowing in mid-to-late August, adjusting to local conditions. It should not be too late, so as to ensure that the seedlings do not die from excessively low temperatures after emergence. Generally, water the prepared ground first, and sow after the water has seeped down.

2. Sowing method: For Polygala tenuifolia, use 1-1.5 kg of seed per mu. Before sowing, soak the seeds in water or a 0.3% potassium dihydrogen phosphate aqueous solution for 1 day and night, then remove them and mix with 3-5 times their amount of fine sand. For autumn sowing, use seeds of the current year and sow in late August, and the seedlings emerge in the spring of the following year.

3. Seedling raising and transplanting: For Polygala tenuifolia, seedling raising and transplanting are carried out in early-to-mid March. Drill sowing is done in the seedbed, covering with about 1 cm of soil, keeping the seedbed moist, and the temperature is best controlled at 15-20°C. Seedlings emerge about 10 days after sowing, and planting is carried out when the seedlings are 5 cm tall.

Planting Methods for Polygala tenuifolia

1. Land selection and preparation: For planting Polygala tenuifolia, sunny, well-drained sandy soil is best. When plowing, apply sufficient base fertilizer at one time. Barnyard manure or compost can be used at 40000 kg/ha, crushed fine and spread evenly. When plowing, 750 kg of superphosphate can be applied.

2. Thinning and filling in seedlings: When Polygala tenuifolia seedlings are 3-5 cm tall, thin them to a plant spacing of 3-6 cm, and fill in gaps promptly where seedlings are missing. For seedling transplanting, it is best to do it on rainy days or in the afternoon.

3. Loosening soil and weeding: Polygala tenuifolia plants are short, and seedlings grow slowly, so attention should be paid to loosening the soil and weeding, pulling weeds as soon as they appear. Loosen the soil shallowly, use a rake to lightly and evenly loosen the ground surface, do this 2 times in a row, keep the soil surface loose and moist, and prevent weeds from covering the plants.

4. Watering and fertilizing: Apart from needing a moderate amount of water during seed germination and the seedling stage, Polygala tenuifolia generally does not need frequent watering in the later growth period. Apply topdressing once each in winter and spring every year and once during April-May. Per mu, 20-25 kg of cake fertilizer or 20 kg of superphosphate can be applied.

5. Foliar topdressing: For Polygala tenuifolia, from mid-June to mid-July each year, spray 50-60 kg of 1% potassium sulfate or 80-100 kg of 0.3% potassium dihydrogen phosphate per mu, once every 10 days, for 2-3 consecutive sprays. The best spraying time is after 5 p.m.

6. Pest and disease control

① Root rot: When diseased plants are found, pull them out and burn them promptly. In the early stage of the disease, spray 1000-fold 50% carbendazim solution 2-3 times every 6-7 days.

② Aphids: Spray with 1500-fold 40% omethoate solution, once every 6-7 days, for 2 consecutive sprays.

③ Leaf blight: Spray the leaves 1-2 times with 800-1000-fold mancozeb solution or 800-fold metalaxyl solution.
