How much do teasel root seeds cost? A detailed guide to growing them

Teasel root, also known as Chuan Duan, Long Dou, Shu Zhe and other names, is a perennial herbaceous plant of the genus Dipsacus in the family Caprifoliaceae. It is distributed in Hubei, Hunan, Jiangxi, Guangxi, Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan and other places, growing beside ditches, in thickets, at forest edges and along field paths. Its root used as medicine has the effects of promoting blood circulation and reducing swelling, promoting tissue regeneration and relieving pain, healing tendons and bones, and tonifying the kidney and strengthening the lower back. Now let us take a look at teasel root seed prices and growing methods!
How much does a jin of teasel root seeds cost?
The price of teasel root seeds is about 60 to 70 yuan per jin, but prices vary greatly depending on seed quality, place of origin, market and other factors. In production, teasel root is generally cultivated in two ways: direct sowing and seedling transplanting. Places with irrigation conditions generally use direct sowing, while sloping land is planted by seedling transplanting. Direct sowing has low cost, the main root is not prone to forking, and product quality is good, but it has higher requirements for the land. The seedling transplanting method produces more forked main roots, but it can make full use of lower-value sloping land and mountain land.
Sowing methods for teasel root
1. Site selection and land preparation: For growing teasel root, choose sandy loam with deep soil layers and loose texture, and fields with good drainage and irrigation conditions. Irrigate the plot (soak it thoroughly) 2 to 3 days before land preparation to ensure soil moisture and ensure seedling emergence.
2. Fertilizing and making beds: For the teasel root seedling bed, first evenly spread 2000 kg of farmyard manure and 50 kg of compound fertilizer per mu over the plot, then run lines to make beds, keeping the bed surface level and fine.
3. Sowing time: Teasel root can be sown by drilling, hole sowing, direct sowing and seedling transplanting, among other methods. Direct sowing is divided into spring sowing and autumn sowing. Spring sowing is generally from late April to May, and autumn sowing is from September to October. In areas at an altitude of 2000 to 3000 m, sowing is generally done from June to July.
4. Sowing method: For direct sowing of teasel root, use 4 jin of seed per mu. For seedling transplanting, 20 jin of seed per mu can be transplanted to 5 mu of field. Evenly scatter the seeds on the thoroughly soaked seedbed surface. After sowing, cover with soil just until the seeds are no longer visible on the bed surface, then water thoroughly. Seedlings gradually emerge after 15 to 20 days.
Growing methods for teasel root
1. Thinning and transplanting: When teasel root seedlings are 10 cm tall, thin them to a spacing of 15×20 cm between plants and rows. The removed seedlings can be used to fill gaps or for transplanting. For seedling transplanting, transplanting begins in the following spring after the ground thaws, with a spacing of 20×25 cm between plants and rows, about 10000 plants per mu.
2. Cultivation and weeding: Weeding of teasel root is mainly done at the seedling stage. Generally, weeding is done 2 times in the year of planting, and once a year thereafter. Also, compared with other medicinal plants, there are not many weeds in the field. After the plants close their rows each year, no weeding is needed.
3. Water and fertilizer management: Topdress teasel root 2 to 3 times. After thinning, apply 1000 kg of diluted human and livestock manure water per mu, then water after application. During June to July, apply 10 kg of ammonium sulfate per mu. Before green-up each year, apply 3000 kg of barnyard manure in furrows between the rows.
4. Removing flower buds: Plants of teasel root grown for more than 1 year bolt and flower in July. In order to concentrate nutrients so the rhizome becomes thick and strong, plants not kept for seed should have their flower stems cut off in time. Plants with overly vigorous leaves can also have some leaves cut off.
5. Pest and disease control: For powdery mildew, spray with 0.2% triadimefon. For root rot, spray with Likuijing. For leaf spot, control with imidacloprid or dimethomorph. For aphids, spray with 40% dimethoate 1000-fold solution. For cutworms, spray with 90% trichlorfon crystal 1000-fold solution or dilute with water and drench the roots.
