Reasons and solutions for pumpkins that only bloom but do not set fruit

When I was in the countryside before, I always heard many people discussing that their pumpkin plants had opened lots of flowers, but they never saw any fruit set. Why is that? Some elders who had grown pumpkins for many years would tell them some old methods to solve the problem of pumpkins not setting fruit, and if it still did not work, the pumpkin vines would be picked to use as a dish. Today I will tell everyone about why pumpkins do not set fruit and teach you a few little solutions.

Reasons for not setting fruit

If you are not very familiar with how to grow pumpkins, then it is very likely to lead to pumpkins only blooming but not setting fruit. Generally, the reasons for this phenomenon are actually very simple: insufficient light, too high a density, incorrect fertilization, and insufficient pollination, among other factors. If these conditions do not reach the level that pumpkins are suited to, then no fruit will set, and even after fruit set the fruit may die and not survive to maturity.

Solutions

1. Pinch off the growing tip at the right time

If the growing tip of a pumpkin is not pinched off, it will keep growing with only one vine. Therefore, in order to increase pumpkin yield and prevent the phenomenon of only blooming but not setting fruit, the growing tip should be pinched off. Generally, when the vine grows to two or three meters, the top of the vine should be pinched off. Usually after three to five days it will grow several new branches, and finally it will bloom and set fruit. Then when the branches grow to a certain extent, the same operation is carried out, gradually turning the branches into new main vines, and then the new vines bloom and set fruit, and so on.

2. Build trellises in time

In many rural areas, pumpkins are basically grown crawling on the ground, and when the vines grow on the ground the density is relatively high, all piled together, and the light penetration is very poor, so this leads to insufficient light, making photosynthesis impossible, and ultimately causing this phenomenon of not setting fruit. Therefore, when the seedlings grow to two or three meters, some frames should be built for them so they grow along the frames, and the fruit-setting rate is increased by enhancing light and ventilation.

3. Prevent excessive vegetative growth

During the growth process of pumpkin vines, they cannot be allowed to keep growing vegetatively, because then they will absorb a lot of nutrients and focus only on vine growth while forgetting to set fruit. Therefore, when the seedlings grow to a certain extent, we should take measures to slow down their growth. The method generally used is to cut a small slit 30 to 40 cm from the root of the vine, then put a little charcoal into it, and that is enough.

4. Assisted pollination

Pumpkin flowers are divided into male flowers and female flowers. Fruit set is generally determined by the female flowers, but in many cases the male flowers on the vine will be more numerous than the female flowers, and the female flowers are also often damaged. Therefore, first we must protect the flowers, and then carry out artificial pollination. In this way, every little flower can be put to use, while also improving pollination efficiency and pollination success rate.

5. Remove yellow leaves

If you find that a small pumpkin has already formed on the pumpkin vine, then at this time we should promptly remove the yellow leaves next to this small pumpkin, and at the same time remove one fifth of the male flowers next to this small pumpkin. This can reduce the absorption of nutrients from the soil by the vine leaves and male flowers, so that they are all supplied to the small pumpkin, promoting its growth.

6. Fertilization methods

A very important factor in pumpkin fruit set is fertilization. Many people do not really understand fertilization methods and just fertilize randomly. For pumpkin growth, the best is generally to use farmyard manure. When setting fruit, apply a little potassium fertilizer or phosphorus fertilizer, and use as little nitrogen fertilizer as possible or not at all, because nitrogen fertilizer only promotes the growth rate of the vines and also reduces the fruit-setting rate.
