How to prevent and control stem splitting in celtuce? These methods must be remembered
Celtuce is one of the most common vegetables in China, and its leaves can be eaten as lettuce. However, during the growth and development of celtuce, improper management can easily lead to stem splitting. Stem splitting has a great impact on both the yield and quality of celtuce. So how should stem splitting in celtuce be prevented and controlled? Let's take a look below.

1. Variety selection
Different celtuce varieties respond differently to stem splitting, so varieties should be selected according to the growing environment and soil conditions. In areas with poor drainage and places with large temperature fluctuations, varieties with low water content and little stem splitting should be chosen, such as white-skinned celtuce. In the opposite areas, high-yielding varieties such as purple-leaf celtuce can be chosen.
2. Fertilizer and water management
During the seedling stage, celtuce grows relatively slowly and needs relatively little fertilizer. After planting, water once with diluted manure water. Apply about 1000 kg of farmyard manure per mu, which can promote root growth and development. It prepares the plant for expanding leaf area, stem swelling and nutrient accumulation, so fertilizer and water in the field should be well controlled. During the rosette stage, pay attention to increasing the application of chloride and potassium fertilizers. During the swelling stage, ensure the fertilizer and water needed by celtuce, because this stage has a very large demand for fertilizer and water; water immediately once it gets slightly dry, but do not overwater, keep it moderate. Remember not to water heavily after a period of drought, because this will further accelerate stem splitting.
3. Increase boron fertilizer application
This boron fertilizer is different in fertilizer and water management, because it needs to be applied at a specific stage. When the heart leaves and outer leaves of celtuce are level, water a little lightly, then apply about 20 jin of quick-soluble fertilizer per mu and spray more foliar fertilizer, but the fertilizer and water should be sprayed at the right time and in the right amount, otherwise it will be detrimental to stem growth.
4. Temperature control
Generally, celtuce is grown in the open field, but when low-temperature weather occurs and lasts for a period of time, a layer of shed should be built to keep celtuce warm. Once the temperature reaches about 20 degrees, the shed can be removed. Try to control the temperature during the celtuce growing period well, and it is best to keep the temperature difference fluctuation at about 2 degrees, so that celtuce grows in a temperature suitable for it.
5. Field management
Pay attention to checking the condition of celtuce in the field. Diseased plants infected with disease should be handled in time, and weeds in the garden should be watched for. Gather them and burn them to prevent or reduce the incidence of pests and diseases. Fertilization should be stopped half a month before harvest, and watering should be appropriately reduced. The harvest time can be determined according to the actual situation and the market.
The above are several preventive and control measures for stem splitting in celtuce. The main thing is still to control the amount of fertilizer and water used for celtuce. Many friends do not pay much attention to stem splitting, but in relatively serious cases it may harm the entire mu of crops. Stem splitting not only affects quality but also has a great impact on yield, so stem splitting should be taken seriously when it occurs.
