Fertilization Methods for High-Yield Rice

China is a major rice-growing country. Long ago, we were still worried about how to get a full meal, and later Yuan Longping came along and developed hybrid rice, which greatly increased rice yields. Today we continue to look for other ways to push rice yields even higher. Today we will learn how fertilization can make rice high-yielding.

1. Base fertilizer

Base fertilizer is the foundation of rice growth, so when applying base fertilizer it must be sufficient. Base fertilizer accounts for a large proportion of the rice growing process. Ordinarily we just spread some farmyard manure and ammonium fertilizer. In fact, the best way to use base fertilizer is a mix of decomposed manure and organic fertilizer, along with a small amount of chemical fertilizer. The chemical fertilizer is mainly phosphate fertilizer and potassium fertilizer, and of course a little nitrogen fertilizer can also be added. However, it is recommended to avoid using too much nitrogen fertilizer and similar chemical fertilizers in the early stage of rice growth. When applying base fertilizer, apply it as deep as possible so that fertility can be maintained.

2. Tillering fertilizer

Tillering fertilizer is generally applied about one week after transplanting. The amount applied this time must not be too heavy, because rice tillering only needs a moderate amount of fertility. If applied too heavily, it will cause the rice to produce many ineffective tillers, which will not only fail to increase rice yield but will also reduce it. The best fertilizer for the rice tillering stage is quick-acting organic fertilizer plus a little urea and livestock manure. Tillering fertilizer should generally be applied in batches, precisely to prevent over-application, so generally apply a little at a time. If the rice in the field is tillering relatively slowly, just apply one more topdressing.

3. Panicle fertilizer

Panicle fertilizer is mainly for promoting flowering and preserving flowers. The number of panicles roughly determines the rice yield, so panicle fertilizer is a relatively important timing in rice fertilization. When the rice is about to head, preparations should be made. Generally, potassium fertilizer is mainly applied, and secondly a little urea can be mixed in to promote growth. After heading, there will be a period when the field water must be dried out and then re-pumped. This reduces the probability of lodging. After re-pumping, apply one more topdressing, mainly nitrogen fertilizer and potassium fertilizer.

4. Grain fertilizer

Grain fertilizer should be applied only after the rice panicles have all fully emerged. At this time it is mainly to make the rice grains fuller and reduce flat grains on the panicle. Generally speaking, phosphate fertilizer and potassium fertilizer are the best fertilizers for promoting full grains, and a little urea should also be mixed in. It can be said that urea runs through the entire fertilization period. When applying grain fertilizer, be careful not to use too much, otherwise it will cause lodging of the rice in the field, and by then the losses will be severe, and the gain will not be worth the loss.

To achieve high-yield rice, fertilization is actually one of the important conditions, and the fertilization method must be correct; fertilization must not be done blindly.
