The causes of pumpkin fruit abortion and the control methods can refer to the following:
Causes (1) Main symptoms: young fruit that has grown to a certain size stops growing, gradually turns yellow and shrinks, and finally dries up or drops off.
       (2) Causes of the disease: poor pollen development. In early spring in greenhouses the temperature is low, and in the later stage of plastic tunnels the temperature is too high, leading to poor
pollen development. When humidity is high, the pollen is also not easily shed, the female flowers cannot be pollinated, seeds cannot form, and therefore sufficient
auxin (IAA) cannot be synthesized, which leads to fruit abortion. Improper fertilizer and water management causes the plants to grow excessively, breaking the balance between vegetative growth and reproductive
growth. In this situation, if artificial pollination is not timely and the best pollination window is missed, fruit abortion is likely to occur.
(3) Control measures
① Prevent excessive growth and promote normal plant growth and development. Strengthen heat preservation measures and strengthen fertilizer and water management to prevent excess soil
moisture and nitrogen fertilizer from causing excessive growth.
② Prune at the right time, thin out fruit. Remove side branches. Zucchini (summer squash) basically sets fruit at every node; because they compete for nutrients, not all can set
fruit, so fruit that is difficult to set should be removed as early as possible.
③ Adjust the balance between vegetative growth and reproductive growth. Harvest according to plant vigor: weak plants should be harvested as early as possible; for vigorous plants,
if there are more female flowers on the upper part, they can be harvested appropriately earlier; excessively vigorous plants should be harvested appropriately later.
④ Chemical treatment: you can use 25-30 mg/L of 2,4-D or 50 mg/L of fruit-setting hormone (Tomato Ton)
to smear the flower stalk, and spray the fruit with 80-150 mg/L gibberellin.
⑤ Carry out artificial pollination: during the flowering period, around 9:00 a.m. every day, pick off male flowers, remove the petals, and apply the pollen
from the anthers onto the stigma of the female flower.
