When growing pumpkins, you often encounter many pumpkin flowers but few fruits. To avoid this, the following rural cultivation techniques can be adopted to increase yields:
1. Timely topping: when the vine grows to 2 m, remove the growing point of the main vine so that the main vine produces 3-4 branches, which then flower and set fruit.
2. Build a trellis: after the branches grow to 2 m, train the vines onto the trellis. This can improve light penetration and ventilation and reduce pests and diseases.
3. Prevent excessive vine growth: cut a slit in the vine 30 cm from the root and insert a piece of charcoal to inhibit excessive growth.
4. Assisted pollination: pick a male flower from a different plant and place it over a female flower, then remove it after 3 days.
5. Remove yellow leaves: promptly remove the basal leaves and old yellow leaves, and remove a small number of male flowers. This both improves ventilation and light penetration and reduces nutrient consumption.
