To increase pumpkin yields, besides selecting excellent varieties, sowing at the right time, and fertilizing reasonably, during the cultivation and management process, you can refer to the following methods:
Pinching the top: when the vine grows to 2 m, remove the growing point of the main vine, and 3 to 4 side vines will grow.
Trellising: to create good light transmission and ventilation conditions for the pumpkins, a trellis needs to be set up. The specific method is: after the side vines grow to 2 m, guide the vines onto the trellis, taking care not to break the vines. Pumpkins grown on a trellis will have fewer pests and diseases, thereby greatly increasing the fruit-setting rate.
Pollination: using artificial supplementary pollination gives a particularly notable yield increase. The method is: cover female flowers that are about to open and are ready for pollination with pumpkin leaves to prevent rainwater from getting in; the next morning at around 9 o'clock, pick male flowers from a different plant and place them over the female flowers; after 2 to 3 days, remove the male flowers used as covers.
Leaf removal: on vines that have already flowered and set fruit, promptly remove the basal leaves and old yellow leaves, and remove 30% of the male flowers. This both improves ventilation and light penetration and avoids consumption of nutrients.
Stem burying: in the later stage of pumpkin growth, that is, after 2 to 3 batches of fruit have set, when some waxy yellow leaves appear near the root area, bury the adventitious roots growing from the vine nodes. This can increase yield by 30% to 40%. The specific method is: choose fertile garden soil and mix in a small amount of organic fertilizer and quick-acting chemical fertilizer, bury 4 to 6 stem nodes, with a soil thickness of about 20 cm. Make sure there is enough stem length to bury. If the stem length between the ground and the trellis is too short, you can appropriately retract the main stem portion from the trellis surface while tidying the vines on the trellis, but never pull hard or move the vines. The soil layer must be buried firmly to favor the growth of adventitious roots. At the same time, pay special attention to the timing of stem burying. If done too early, it easily causes excessive vegetative growth; if done too late, adventitious roots sprout and grow slowly.
