For growing black-skinned winter melon, you can refer to the following methods for management:
Fertilizing: After planting, fertilize once every 7 to 10 days on sunny days (10% to 15% human manure and urine, or 0.5% to 1% urea), applying lightly in the early stage and heavily in the later stage. The key topdressing for winter melon should be carried out from the time the vines are trained onto the trellis until the young melons reach 4 to 5 kg. During this period, in addition to drenching with human manure and urine, you can apply 60 to 80 kg of decomposed bran fertilizer and 40 to 50 kg of compound fertilizer per mu. A total of 7 to 8 topdressings are applied over the whole period, with a total of about 150 kg urea, 40 kg phosphate fertilizer and 40 kg potassium fertilizer per mu; the early stage accounts for about 30% to 40%, and the middle and late stages account for 60% to 70%. In short, fertilizing winter melon should follow the principles of frequent application, light application, lighter early and heavier later, and a reasonable balance of amino acid nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.
Drainage and irrigation: Water demand is relatively low at the seedling stage; in sunny and warm weather, water in the morning and evening when the soil is dry. After the vines are trained onto the trellis, water demand gradually increases and peaks during the flowering and fruiting period; during this period, water frequently to keep the soil moist. On sunny days, water thoroughly at least once a day (never water in the afternoon), and keep the water pit at a water level of 7 to 10 cm. On rainy days, take care to drain away standing water. Reduce water use 10 to 15 days before harvest and drain the water pit dry to improve the storage and transport quality of the winter melon.
