Zucchini can be controlled for excessive vigor using the following methods:
1. Temperature control management in the early stage
Temperature is the first factor in controlling excessive vigor. In the early fruiting stage of zucchini, the suitable daytime temperature for growth and development is 18-22°C, and the nighttime temperature is 8-10°C. If the daytime temperature is above 25°C, the accumulation of photosynthetic products is low while consumption is high, and zucchini is prone to excessive vigor. Therefore, when zucchini is planted for the autumn-delayed crop or overwintering crop and the temperature is still high at planting time, management should focus on temperature control rather than raising the temperature to promote plant growth. The temperature control measure is to strengthen ventilation, and never close the front air vents too early.
2. Avoid excessive soil moisture
After zucchini is planted and the seedlings have recovered, management should focus on controlling water to promote root development. If the soil is not overly dry, do not rush to water before fruiting. Of course, if the plants are severely wilted from lack of water, then small amounts of water should be run through to ensure normal plant growth, and flood irrigation must never be used, as it causes excessive vegetative growth. At the same time, after the first fruit of zucchini has set, the amount of water for the first irrigation should not be too large either, because too much water easily causes fruit abortion, which in turn leads to excessive plant vigor. To promote the smooth progress of reproductive growth, irrigation can be done with small amounts of water.
3. Control nitrogen and supplement potassium in the later stage
After zucchini enters the fruiting stage, it requires a large amount of potassium fertilizer, so when applying fertilizer with irrigation water, attention should also be paid to the use of high-potassium fertilizers. High-nitrogen fertilizers must not be used excessively, to avoid excessive nitrogen causing excessive plant vigor. Of course, if zucchini is planted too early and the early temperature is too high, hormones can also be used for regulation, but they must not be used excessively; in particular, paclobutrazol should not be used continuously multiple times. Generally, 5-7 days after zucchini seedlings have recovered, spray the plants with 15% paclobutrazol at 1500 times dilution, but do not spray only the growing point, to regulate plant growth.
