    1. Main causes of sweet pepper plant death
First, the soil temperature is too high within 0-15 cm of the topsoil near the root system; second, the soil moisture is too heavy within 0-20 cm of the topsoil near the root system. As long as one condition is met, a small number of plants will die; if both conditions are met at the same time, a large number of plants will die. In addition, too large a fruit load can also cause plant death.
    2. Preventive measures
    1. Prevent the soil temperature of the 0-15 cm topsoil layer from becoming too high
    (1) Water little and often. During the fruiting period of sweet peppers, water once every 6-8 days, just enough to moisten the 0-10 cm soil layer; watering little and often can lower the topsoil temperature.
    (2) Intercrop or relay crop with tall-stemmed crops. Sweet peppers are a medium-light plant; strong light and excessively high temperatures easily cause plant death. Using long-vined common beans or sweet corn intercropped or relay cropped with sweet peppers, planting a row of common beans or sweet corn every 2-4 m, can effectively reduce light intensity and lower the topsoil temperature.
    (3) Reasonable close planting. Choose the corresponding planting spacing according to different cultivation levels, generally 40 x 40-50 cm, so that the plants close the rows during the fruiting period, and try not to let the sun shine on the plastic film; then the soil temperature of the topsoil layer under the plastic film will not rise too high.
    2. Prevent excessive moisture in the 0-20 cm topsoil layer
    (1) Use high-ridge cultivation: adopt a high-bed cultivation method to avoid excessive soil moisture caused by heavy rain.
    (2) Artificially control the amount of watering; do not water heavily (each watering should not be too much: when transplanting, water about 2 kg per planting hole for the settling water; afterward, water about 1 kg per planting hole each time; during the fruiting period, water about 0.5 kg per planting hole). Years of experience tell us that during the fruiting period, sweet pepper soil moisture should be in a state of "not dry and not damp, no plant death; alternately dry and damp, plant death easily occurs."
    (3) For summer and autumn planting, high-bed cultivation or rain-shelter cultivation (greenhouse) should be used to avoid excessive soil moisture caused by heavy rain.     3. Rescue measures
The characteristic of sweet pepper plant death during the fruiting period is that the more fruit produced, the more severe the plant death. When plants showing early-stage wilting appear in the field, the effect of applying medicine at this time is very poor, or even ineffective. According to many years of field practice, the effective approach is: immediately remove the fruits that are about to be harvested, reduce the fruit load, and plants in the early stage of wilting can recover normal growth.
