The following methods can be used to promote early maturity of summer corn:
1. Foliar fertilization. In the middle growth stage of corn, spray a mixture of 0.3% monopotassium phosphate plus zinc and boron micro-fertilizers to promote corn kernel formation, improve stress resistance, and advance maturity.
2. Timely control of pests and diseases. Reduce the damage caused by pests and diseases in the later stage of corn, improve light energy utilization, and promote the transformation and accumulation of nutrients in summer corn. Therefore, control of corn brown spot, large and small leaf spot, aphids, and corn borer should be done well.
3. Alternate-row detasseling. "When corn loses its head, its strength is like an ox." After detasseling corn, first, the nutrients and water needed for tassel flowering can be redirected to supply the growth and development needs of the ear. Second, the male flowers are at the top of the plant, and removing part of the male flowers prevents shading, which is beneficial to corn photosynthesis. Therefore, alternate-row detasseling can speed up the maturity progress of corn. Detasseling method: remove every other row or every other plant. The most suitable time for detasseling is when the tassel has just emerged and can be held by hand; after pollination is complete, remove all remaining tassels.
4. Remove empty plants. Pull out plants that cannot set ears and diseased plants, which saves water and fertilizer and also helps ventilation and light penetration.
5. Peel back husks and sun the ears. At the late milk stage of corn, gently peel open the husks on the corn ear so that the corn kernels are directly exposed to sunlight, which can promote nutrient transformation and dehydration of the corn kernels and advance maturity by 7-8 days.
6. Harvest with the plant. At the dough stage of corn, dig up the corn with roots, promptly move it out of the field, and place it upright in a cool place behind a house or under a tree. It is best to pile soil at the roots and water a little to maintain the green leaf function for a longer time, promote the transport of nutrients from stems and leaves back into the kernels, and increase kernel weight. The storage pile should not be too large, and the stacking time should not be too long; 15-20 days is suitable.
