To do a good job of summer-sown corn, the following preparations should be made:
1. Seed treatment. Select excellent varieties: for dual-purpose grain and forage use, use Nongda 108, Nongda 86, Nongda 95, etc.; for grain corn, use Zhengdan 958, Jingzao 13, Jidan 26, etc.; for special silage corn, use Keduo 4, Keqing 1, Beiqingzhu 1, etc. Screen and grade the seeds, using first- and second-grade seeds; before sowing, they need to be sun-dried, coated, or treated by seed dressing.
2. Treatment of the previous crop and land preparation and fertilization. The straw of the previous wheat crop should be crushed and then spread evenly, with no heaping, and the stubble height should not exceed 25 cm. At sowing, there should be sufficient soil moisture, and the soil water content should not be lower than 16%. Summer-sown corn generally uses no-till sowing on stubble, and at sowing, furrows are opened to apply 15 kg/mu of corn special fertilizer.
3. Sowing. The sowing rate should be determined according to corn seed size, field germination rate, and variety characteristics. For silage corn, the compact type should be kept at a density of 4500-4800 plants: the flat type at 4300-4500 plants. For grain corn, the compact type at 4000-4500 plants: the flat type at 3500-4000 plants. Sowing depth is 5-6 cm on sandy soil and 3-5 cm on loam soil.
4. Chemical weed control and mid-to-late management. In plots with visible weeds, before sowing, 1000 mL of 10% glyphosate can be mixed with 60 kg of water, or 200 g of 20% paraquat aqueous solution can be mixed with 10 kg of water. After sowing and before emergence, 75 g of 40% atrazine emulsion plus 50 g of 85% acetochlor emulsifiable concentrate can be mixed with 40 kg of water for soil treatment. When corn growth enters the large trumpet stage, pay attention to controlling northern leaf blight, southern leaf blight, brown spot, and sheath blight. In the mid-to-late growth period of corn, use Trichogramma and phoxim granules to control corn borer and armyworm. At the large trumpet stage, combine with cultivating and apply 25-30 kg of urea per mu as topdressing.
5. Timely harvest. Silage corn is harvested 20-30 days after silking, giving high yield and good quality; grain corn is harvested when the ears are fully mature but the plants have not yet died.
