The factors affecting corn yield are as follows:
1. Unreasonable planting density. Too high a planting density is a fairly prominent problem in current summer corn production. For example, some farmers growing "Nongda 108" left more than 5,000 plants per 667 sq m (1 mu), about 1/3 more than the suitable density for this variety. Because the density is too high, the growth and development of individual plants is poor, the rate of empty stalks is high, the ear tips of the female ears are severely bare, and lodging occurs to varying degrees, resulting in reduced yield.
2. Unscientific fertilization. In fertilization, the phenomena of emphasizing nitrogen fertilizer, neglecting phosphate fertilizer, and ignoring potassium fertilizer and micronutrient fertilizers are widespread. This is because crop yield is governed by the law of the minimum. Applying a single excessive amount of nitrogen fertilizer cannot achieve high yield; instead, too much nitrogen fertilizer leads to poor lodging resistance and serious pests and diseases, causing reduced yield to varying degrees. In addition, improper fertilization timing, as well as the blind application of certain "corn special fertilizers" with too low available nutrient content (note: based on the pure content of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium; medium and trace elements should not be counted), will both cause yield decline.
3. Untimely watering. The mindset of relying on the sky and waiting for rain is serious. Often, instead of watering the "key water" well according to the water requirements of corn, farmers only apply "life-saving water" when the crop suffers drought, thereby seriously affecting yield.
