When planting bitter melon in June, the following points should be noted:
Pruning: since many grafted bitter melon seedlings are still being transplanted from late May to mid-June, this portion of bitter melon seedlings still needs strengthened pruning in June and July. Bitter melon has a particularly strong branching habit, and almost every leaf may produce lateral vines. In order to create a good growing environment with ventilation and light penetration and to reduce nutrient consumption, lateral branches, flower buds and tendrils below 1 m should all be removed. In particular, flower buds and tendrils consume a great deal of nutrients, so they should be picked off as soon as they first appear; the earlier they are removed, the better.
Disease and pest, melon fruit fly: use 50% dichlorvos emulsifiable concentrate at 1000 times dilution, or 2.5% deltamethrin at 3000 times dilution.
Mites: use 36% propargite emulsifiable concentrate at 1000-1500 times dilution, 5% flufenoxuron emulsifiable concentrate at 2000 times dilution, or 1.5% abamectin emulsifiable concentrate at 3000 times dilution.
Fusarium wilt: drench the roots with 25% benlate or 50% carbendazim powder, etc. If diseased plants are found, they should be pulled up and burned immediately.
Powdery mildew: the disease occurs during flowering and fruiting, covering the leaves with white powdery material, causing the leaves to lose green color and turn yellow, resulting in premature aging of the plant. Control method: when white powdery material appears on the leaves, spray the leaf surface once every 7-10 days with an aqueous solution of cyproconazole, an aqueous solution of triadimefon, Cuibei, or an aqueous solution of sulfur suspension concentrate for control, spraying continuously 2-3 times. Note that the amount of medicinal solution must be generous.
Phytophthora blight: on the leaves it mostly starts from the leaf tip or leaf margin; the lesions are irregular in shape with indistinct edges, initially dark green and water-soaked, later turning brown. The lesions can expand to cover the entire leaf or more than half of it. When humid, a ring of white mold grows at the boundary of the lesions. Control agents: spray with chlorothalonil, Yike, Bordeaux mixture, vinclozolin, Anke, dimethomorph, fosetyl-aluminum, Sandofan, or Ridomil Gold; remove diseased leaves and take them away for destruction.
