When planting Chinese yam, note the following points:
    1. Soil requirements: choose a plot with level ground, loose soil, a deep soil layer, strong water and fertilizer retention capacity, and easy drainage. Sandy loam, light loam and loam are the most suitable soils.
    2. Variety and seedling selection: choose vigorous, high-yielding, high-quality, disease-resistant varieties. At present, the varieties more widely cultivated in our county are Bangyao and Xiaobaizui. For seed yam, choose uniform, neatly shaped, disease-free tubers, and replace them once every 4-5 years to reduce the occurrence of variety degeneration caused by continuous planting year after year.
    3. Sowing: take the 5 cm soil temperature reaching 10°C as the standard. In our county this is generally in late April.
    4. Fertilization: using chicken manure as a base fertilizer is originally beneficial to yam growth, but if the chicken manure applied is not fully decomposed, it will compete with the yam for fertilizer and water during its decomposition process, and will increase the number of underground pests, which instead has an adverse effect on yam growth.
    5. Pesticide use: by no means add more pesticide and less water when spraying, and do not use pesticides blindly. The correct method of pesticide use is: after disease occurs, determine what kind of disease or pest it is, then prescribe the remedy for the cause. The pesticide concentration should be appropriate, and different pesticides should be used alternately in rotation. This can both improve control efficacy and reduce costs.
