To plant and manage ma bamboo shoots, you can refer to the following methods:
I. Cultivation Techniques
Planting density: row spacing of 4 m * 4 m or 4 m * 5 m. The size of the planting hole depends on the size of the bamboo seedling, about 1 times larger than the seedling root ball, generally 50 cm square and 40 cm deep. Place the mother bamboo diagonally in the hole, fill with soil in layers, compact it, water it, then cover with soil, with a thickness preferably exceeding the original buried depth of the mother bamboo by 3 cm.
II. Management Measures
1. Soil scraping and sun exposure: Scraping away soil is to expose the shoot buds (shoot bud scales) on the bamboo stump above the soil surface to sunlight, so as to raise the temperature, stimulate and promote the germination of shoot buds, and at the same time facilitate fertilization. Generally in early March, use a hoe to scrape the soil away from around the bamboo clump from the outside inward, so that the shoot buds are exposed above the soil, but be careful not to damage the shoot buds.
2. Fertilization: 3 times per year. Spring fertilizer (base fertilizer) is applied after soil scraping and sun exposure in late March to promote the germination of shoot buds and increase the yield of the bamboo clump. Commonly used organic fertilizer (farmyard manure) is 25-50 kg per clump, or decomposed cake fertilizer 7-10 kg. Apply the fertilizer around the bamboo clump that has already been scraped open, and cover with soil immediately after fertilization. The second and third applications are topdressing, which should be carried out in the early and peak stages of bamboo shoot emergence (June-September) to promote bamboo shoot growth and increase yield. Topdressing uses human excrement and urine, pig pen manure, or manure from livestock and poultry such as cattle and sheep, applying 10-15 kg per clump. First open a ditch 1-2 chi around the bamboo clump, apply the fertilizer into the ditch, and cover with soil immediately. Be careful to prevent fertilizer from directly contacting young shoots, so as to avoid causing bamboo shoot shrinkage and death, which would affect the yield and quality of the shoots.
3. Earthing up: For bamboo shoots not yet emerged from the soil, the shoot sheaths are pale yellow or brown, and the shoot flesh is fine, white, crisp, tender, and fresh in taste. After bamboo shoots are exposed to light, the shoot sheaths turn green or brown. The bamboo shoots age, and shoot quality declines. Therefore, before the shoots emerge from the soil, use fine, moist soil to earth them up, which can prevent bamboo shoots from aging and improve shoot quality. Through earthing up, large shoots can also be cultivated and yield increased. The earthing-up thickness is generally 15-30 cm (about 4-8 cun).
