Sweet bamboo shoots are one of the long-term growing economic crops in the subtropics. They like moisture but fear waterlogging. They can be planted in all areas of southern China, especially on hillside land with deep soil layers, which is most suitable. Their main advantages are early growth, rapid development, high yield, and high economic value. Under normal circumstances, they can be harvested in the second year after planting. In the third year, they can enter the peak production period. In recent years, production practice has shown that the annual yield of sweet bamboo shoots per mu can reach 2500 to 5000 kg, and high-yield fields can reach 10,000 to 15,000 kg, with considerable economic income. Planting sweet bamboo shoots is an effective measure for improving agricultural structural adjustment in mountainous areas and increasing farmers' income. The planting techniques are referenced as follows:
         1. Land preparation: Choose soil that is convenient for transportation, with deep, loose, fertile soil, low gravel content, and slightly acidic (ph4.5-6.2) for planting. Before planting, thoroughly deep plow and loosen the soil and dig planting holes with a diameter of 0.5 m and a depth of 0.4 m. The planting spacing (plant and row spacing) is generally 4 x 4.5 m, and it can also be appropriately sparse or dense according to soil fertility and light conditions. Apply 25-30 kg of green manure, 3-5 loads of farmyard manure or burned soil, and an appropriate amount of lime to each hole. Plant after the green manure has decomposed and settled. In low-lying fields, the planting holes should not be too deep, and mound planting is most suitable.
        2. Planting: The time for planting bamboo shoots is around Qingming each year. It is best to place the bamboo seedlings in flowing water to soak and cultivate them until new roots grow, and then plant them. When planting, place the bamboo stump flat, with the bamboo culm at a 45°-60° angle to the ground, the basal buds facing horizontally to both sides, keep the root system spread out, backfill with loose soil, and compact it. The depth should be such that the bamboo stump is 15-20 cm from the soil surface. After planting, pour water into the bamboo node at the top of the bamboo seedling, cover with turf soil, and water thoroughly to settle the roots. After planting, keep the soil moist. In case of drought, water once every 2-3 days. In rainy weather, do a good job of drainage and waterlogging prevention, strengthen management, prevent shaking by people and livestock, and promptly control pests and diseases when found.
