For moso bamboo forests, choose hilly slopes. When preparing the land in winter, remove stones, tree stumps and miscellaneous trees. For gentle slopes below 20 degrees, plow the entire area 33 cm deep. On sections of 20-30 degrees, build contour terraces. On steep slopes above 30 degrees, only clear the ground 2-2.3 m around each planting point to avoid soil and water loss. Plant 20-25 bamboo plants per mu. Before planting, dig holes 1 m square and 50 cm deep, piling topsoil and subsoil separately on both sides. Apply rotted barn manure or compost in the holes, mix it into the soil, and cover with a layer of topsoil. Then place the seed bamboo into the hole, lay the rhizome flat, and make the roots and soil closely contact. First cover with topsoil, then with subsoil, and press down layer by layer so that the rhizome is buried about 33 cm deep in the soil, and water appropriately. Cover the top with loose soil slightly higher than the ground in a steamed bun shape to avoid water accumulation and rhizome rot. Cover the soil surface with dry grass, dead leaves, etc. to reduce water evaporation, and set up supports to protect against wind.
Sowing and seedling raising:
In the Yangtze River basin, plant bamboo in winter or early spring. At this time the temperature is low, bamboo grows slowly, and after cutting the rhizomes and roots there is little bleeding, so it is easy to survive. Usually choose young bamboo produced the previous year that is robust, has lower branching, is free of pests and diseases, and whose culm diameter at breast height has already reached 3-6 cm as seed bamboo. After digging up the whole plant, select seed plants with robust mature rhizomes that are bright yellow in color, have plump buds, and dense and well-developed roots. They have strong vitality, will later sprout shoots and grow bamboo well, and will send out new rhizomes early. When transporting, wrap them to protect the buds and roots, and keep the original soil moist.
