In summer, high temperatures and frequent rain cause severe vine decline in tomatoes. During the over-summering period, the "two changes, three timely" management measures should be adopted to prevent vine decline.
Change the cultivation method: Change flat-bed cultivation to ridge cultivation, which can prevent tomato roots from being waterlogged and declining. For those already using flat-bed cultivation, you can combine this with earthing up, gradually turning the bed center into a ridge back over several rounds. Generally, complete the earthing up in 2-3 rounds to prevent excessive earthing up at one time from affecting the root system's absorption capacity.
Change the pruning technique: When the first inflorescence sets fruit, use the first lateral branch growing below the second inflorescence to replace the main stem. Likewise, after it produces two or three inflorescences, select a lateral branch from the middle of the main stem and train it as the main stem. By continuously pinching and switching the growing tip in this way, the plant is stimulated to renew its growth, so that the plant does not decline over the summer and sets more fruit.
Timely supply of water and fertilizer: Water about once every 7 days, and apply a topdressing of quick-acting nitrogen fertilizer such as urea or ammonium nitrate once every 15-20 days, applying about 5 kg per mu. At the same time, spray a potassium dihydrogen phosphate solution on the leaves to keep the plants robust and prevent excessive vegetative growth.
Timely prevention and control of pests and diseases: The main diseases of tomatoes during the over-summering period are late blight and viral disease. For late blight, use carbendazim and zineb mixed at a 1:1 ratio and diluted 500 times for spraying, then spray again after an interval of 10-15 days. Before viral disease occurs, spray a 0.1-0.3 potassium permanganate solution once every 7-10 days to prevent viral disease; in addition, promptly spray 40% dimethoate emulsifiable concentrate diluted 1500-2000 times to kill aphids and prevent aphids from transmitting viral disease.
Timely drainage of accumulated water: Tomatoes are afraid of waterlogging, so water during the cool morning and evening hours, and immediately drain the accumulated water from the furrows after irrigation.
