Pay attention to the following points when planting garlic:
Sprouting: After harvesting, garlic seeds remain dormant for a certain period. Therefore, 10 days before planting, the selected garlic seeds should be placed in a cool place and covered with fine sand or loess. Before sowing, soak them in well water for 12 hours. In this way, they will not only sprout 2-3 days earlier, but also grow uniformly and vigorously.
Soil preparation: Garlic likes moist sandy soil. Other loess and clay soils can also be planted as long as they are broken up. The beds and ridges are best oriented east-west, with a bed length of about 10 m, a width of 1.2 m, and a ditch width of 8-9 cun. Apply 30 loads of farmyard manure per mu, and turn it into the soil below 3 cun deep with an iron rake.
Sowing: Garlic seeds are divided into white-skinned and red-skinned types. The red-skinned type can be sown in early August; the white-skinned type can be sown in late August. To prevent the garlic leaves from crowding and shading each other after they grow, when sowing the seeds in the field, each clove should be arranged in the same direction. A 1.2 m long bamboo strip can be used as a guide line for sowing, so that the flat side of the garlic is parallel to the bamboo strip and the round side faces south or north, inserting one clove every 1.5-2 cun. Insert them slightly below the bed surface. The row spacing is 3 cun. The garlic cloves between rows should be staggered in a triangular pattern, then cover with thatch or rice straw to provide shade and retain water. Finally, scatter the fine soil from cleaning the ditches onto the grass on the bed surface to prevent the grass from being blown away by the wind. Irrigate that evening until it penetrates, so that germination and growth proceed smoothly.
Topdressing: When the garlic seedlings grow 2-3 leaves, if growth is poor, apply 1% urea water in bands row by row; do not splash it randomly.
