How to control weeds, pests and diseases when planting summer corn? Please explain: after sowing summer corn and before emergence, it is susceptible to damage from underground pests such as cutworms; at the seedling stage it faces damage from small brown planthoppers, Athetis lepigone, wireworms, thrips, aphids, etc.; at the grain-filling stage, major diseases such as stalk rot (green wilt), ear rot, leaf spot diseases and southern rust occur locally, and major pests such as corn borers and aphids cause severe damage; there may also be harmful organisms that cause corn lodging and stalk breakage, affecting corn yield and mechanized operations.

After sowing summer corn and before emergence, it is susceptible to damage from underground pests such as cutworms; at the seedling stage it faces damage from small brown planthoppers, Athetis lepigone, wireworms, thrips, aphids, etc.; at the grain-filling stage, major diseases such as stalk rot (green wilt), ear rot, leaf spot diseases and southern rust occur locally, and major pests such as corn borers and aphids cause severe damage; there may also be harmful organisms that cause corn lodging and stalk breakage, affecting corn yield and mechanized operations.
The main weeds in corn fields include crabgrass, purslane, goosegrass, field bindweed, lambsquarters, foxtail, purple nutsedge, redroot pigweed, velvetleaf, etc.
For the control of these pests, diseases and weeds, Associate Researcher Hao Junjie suggests first choosing disease-resistant varieties as much as possible, and second, coating the seeds before sowing to reduce the occurrence of pests and diseases. For example, select coated seeds according to local conditions, or use the corn seed coating agents fuxinzole (15% seed coating agent) or kefuwei (25% seed coating agent) to coat the seeds, so as to control underground pests such as small cutworms, white grubs and wireworms, and prevent corn stalk rot, etc. Chemical weeding can be carried out after sowing and before emergence; after watering or rain, use 200-250 ml of yeyou (40% suspension concentrate) or jiayiyou (42% suspension concentrate) per mu, mixed with 50 liters of water, to carry out a closed treatment on the ground.
The main corn disease is stalk rot, and seed coating with manshijin, captan, shileshi, etc. can be used to reduce the occurrence of the disease. The main pests causing relatively severe damage include small brown planthoppers and Athetis lepigone. Per mu, use 20 g of imidacloprid (10% wettable powder) or 20 g of buprofezin (25% wettable powder) mixed with 50 liters of water to control small brown planthoppers and prevent the occurrence of maize rough dwarf disease; per mu, use 500 g of trichlorfon (90% crystals), add a small amount of water and mix with 7-8 kg of roasted wheat bran or soybean cake to make a poison bait, and scatter it between corn rows in the evening to control Athetis lepigone and underground pests. At the small trumpet stage (when the ninth to tenth leaves have unfolded), mix 1.5% phoxim granules with fine sand at a ratio of 1:5, mix well and apply into the leaf whorl, 1.5-2 g per plant, to control corn borers.
