I. Current Occurrence of Pests and Diseases in Honeysuckle

According to a systematic survey conducted by our station on May 29: no honeysuckle aphids were found in the survey. For red spider mites, the average rate of infested plants was 53.3%, with a maximum of 60.0%; the average rate of infested leaves was 15.7%, with a maximum of 31.3%; the average number of mites per 100 leaves was 31.3, with a maximum of 38.0; the average mite infestation index was 4.08, with a maximum of 5.25. For brown spot disease, the average rate of diseased plants was 46.7%, with a maximum of 60.0%; the average rate of diseased leaves was 7.3%, with a maximum of 10.0%; the average disease index was 1.92, with a maximum of 2.75. For powdery mildew, the average rate of diseased plants was 30.0%, with a maximum of 40.0%; the average rate of diseased leaves was 3.7%, with a maximum of 5.0%; the average disease index was 0.92, with a maximum of 1.25. In April-May 2012, there was a lot of rainy weather, which was favorable for the occurrence (epidemic) of pests and diseases. At present, the occurrence and damage of honeysuckle pests and diseases are showing a rapid upward trend.

II. Occurrence Trend

Based on a comprehensive analysis of the current occurrence of honeysuckle pests and diseases, future weather forecasts, the overall layout and varietal resistance levels of honeysuckle, and farmers' control techniques, it is predicted that in 2012, honeysuckle aphids will occur heavily (level 4), with an affected area of 80,000 mu-times; red spider mites will occur moderately to heavily (level 4), with an affected area of 80,000 mu-times; powdery mildew will occur overall moderately (level 3), with localized moderate to heavy occurrence (level 4), and an affected area of 60,000 mu-times; brown spot disease will occur moderately (level 3), with an affected area of 50,000 mu-times. Other pests and diseases will occur lightly (levels 1-2), with an affected area of 20,000 mu-times.

III. Optimal Control Timing

At present, red spider mites, powdery mildew, brown spot disease and others in most honeysuckle plantations have reached the control threshold, and chemical control must be carried out immediately. For brown spot disease and powdery mildew, apply chemicals at the early stage of disease onset, with a control threshold of 3.0% diseased plant rate.

IV. Control Methods

1. Agricultural control: select disease-resistant varieties, strengthen cultivation management, maintain reasonable planting density, carry out shaping and pruning, and ensure ventilation and light penetration; fertilize scientifically, increase the application of phosphorus and potassium fertilizers to improve plant disease resistance, and take special care not to apply excessive nitrogen, so as to avoid overly dense plant growth that aggravates the severity of the disease.

2. Chemical control: honeysuckle is a plant used both as medicine and food, so special attention must be paid to food (medicinal) safety. Highly toxic pesticides are prohibited in production, and chemical control agents must be used under the guidance of technical personnel from plant protection departments and agricultural technology departments.

Recommended agents and dosages for controlling aphids: 24 g of 25% pymetrozine (Feidian) wettable powder per mu; or 12 g of 40% acetamiprid (Honghonglie) water-dispersible granules per mu; or 30 g of 10% imidacloprid wettable powder per mu.

Recommended agents for controlling red spider mites: 15% pyridaben emulsifiable concentrate at 1000 times dilution; or 20% clofentezine wettable powder at 2500 times dilution; or 20% abamectin-pyridaben sulfone wettable powder at 2000 times dilution.

Recommended agents and dosages for controlling brown spot disease: 100 g of 80% thiophanate-methyl wettable powder per mu, or 100 g of 70% mancozeb wettable powder per mu.

Recommended agents and dosages for controlling powdery mildew: 100 g of 25% triadimefon wettable powder per mu; or 9 g of 50% hexaconazole (Yingli) water-dispersible granules per mu.
