What causes deformed cucumbers? We ask our friends to help explain. In cucumber cultivation, deformed cucumbers often occur, seriously affecting growers' economic returns. Below we introduce the causes of various deformed cucumbers for your reference.
1. Curved cucumber:When stems and leaves are too dense, row spacing is narrow, ventilation and light penetration are poor, fertilizer is insufficient, and drought and water shortage cause the plant to weaken and suffer from malnutrition, curved cucumbers are likely to form, but these should be distinguished from those caused by mechanical damage.
2. Big-bellied cucumber:Incomplete pollination and fertilization can produce big-bellied cucumbers, especially when caused by factors such as potassium deficiency. Big-bellied cucumbers can also form when there is a water shortage in the early and late stages of the same cucumber's expansion but no water shortage in the middle stage.
3. Pointed-tip cucumber:Under parthenocarpic conditions in the greenhouse, continuous high temperature, drought and other conditions cause poor expansion and growth from the middle to the tip of the cucumber, and the fruit length is also much smaller.
4. Wasp-waisted cucumber:The middle of the cucumber is as thin as a wasp's waist, caused by abnormal development under the effects of high temperature and drought, malnutrition, and uneven watering.
5. Thin-shouldered cucumber:A deformed cucumber in which the fruit stalk becomes extremely short and the shoulder becomes thin and long like a bottle, a physiological state of excess nutrition excessively fruit-bearing growth; this type of cucumber is more likely to occur after pinching.
6. Hook cucumber:The tip of the cucumber curves like a hook, caused by nutrients concentrating in the stems and leaves and not being fully supplied to the fruit, or by pests and diseases affecting plant growth.
Therefore, to prevent the occurrence of deformed cucumbers, it is necessary, based on the plant's growth characteristics, to apply fertilizer and combat drought promptly as the weather changes, avoid forcibly removing leaves, promptly control pests and diseases, apply more organic fertilizer, and use growth regulators properly; this can greatly reduce the occurrence of deformed cucumbers. If deformed cucumbers appear, they should be removed as early as possible.
